'Janmashtami' festival is Dedicated to Lord Vishnu as Sri Krishna. The Hindu festival of Shravan (April - August) is celebrated in India on the day of Ashtami of Krishna Paksh. According to Hindu mythology, Krishna was born in Mathura to Kill the demon king Kansa, who was the brother of his virtuous mother.
Men and women on the occasion of Janmashtami observe fast and pray to Lord Krishna. Temples and homes are beautifully decorated and illuminated. On this very Special Occasion the Devotees visit the Holy Temples in Vrindavan (Uttar Pradesh). This festival is also known as Krishnashtmi or Gokulashtmi.
In north India, during the celebration of this festival the hymns are sung and danced. Every Temple is Specially Decorated for this Special Day.
यदा यदा ही धर्मस्य ग्लानिर्भवति भारत ।The Holy Gita Lord Krishna says Whenever there is a decline of righteousness, and a rise of unrighteousness, at that time I take birth in the world and incarnate as Human.
अभ्युत्थानमधर्मस्य तदात्मानं सृजाम्यहम् ॥७॥
परित्राणाय साधूनां विनाशाय च दुष्कृताम् ।
धर्मसंस्थापनार्थाय सम्भवामि युगे युगे ॥८॥
To deliver the pious and to Punish the guilty, and to reestablish the principles of religion, I Myself Incarnate, millennium after millennium.
and Janmashtami is celebrated as Lord Krishna's Birth Day. On this very Sacred day Lord Vishnu incarnated as lord Krishna.
On the day Kansa's sister Devaki's wedding, Some voice from the sky was heard Saying that Devaki's 8th son would be the reason of Kansa's Death. Kansa because of his fear of death, imprisoned Vasudeva and Devaki.
After a long wait, that month of August (Bhandon) approached and Krishna was born at midnight of Ashtami Rohini Nakshatra as the son of Devaki and Shri Vasudev in that Prison where kansa kept both of them. There was a Miracle All the locks automatically opened and Vasudev Took Krishna to Nand baba's House.
Krishna grew up as Yashoda's and Nand's child. In his youth Krishna killed Kamsa along with all his cruel associates, liberated his parents from prison, and reinstated Ugrasen as the King of Mathura.
