 According to the prevailing Story of Vat Savitri Fast, Savitri was the daughter of Ashwpti. Her marriage was Fixed with Satyavan. Satyawan was a great saint and Religious Person. Devarsi Narada Predicted that Satyavan will die after one year but Savitri had accepted Satyavan as her husband.

She was married with Satyavan. Everything was going normal in their married life. Satyawan used to go to forest to bring woods and Savitri used to Serve her Blind Father and Mother in laws.

One year passed and Finally that day approached.
Savitri was getting anxious as she was aware about Devarshi Narada's Prediction that her Husband will die after a year and that one year was already passed. Satyawan was just leaving to the forest with his axe. Savitri urged to go with Him. After taking her husband and her in laws permission she went to the forest with Satyawan.

In the Forest Satyawan started cutting woods but That day Satyawan was not feeling well and He Fainted and lay in the lap of his wife. Savitri was really worried. She had no idea what Should she do. She remembered Narada's prediction.

Sudden, She saw a man came near her. He was sitting on a black buffalo.
She asked, Who are you?
That man Replied, I am Yama. Just because of the power of your Chasity my messengers were not able to come here. that's why I myself came here to take your husband with me as his age is over now. He took Satyavan's Soul with him and left to South side.

Savitri had no other option. She started following Yama.
Yama asked her to go back but she refused by Saying "where ever is my Husband I must go there" it's my duty to be with my Husband and serve Him.
"You can't come with Him because your age is still left" - Said Yama

She was not willing to go back. Yama refused to take her with her husband again and again. but she was still following Him. Yama was pleased for her Strong dedication and her Pure love for her Husband. 

Savitri Said, If you are really pleased with me i want three boons.
ok Sure, Said yama

As First Boon, She asked Yama to Give her in-laws eyes back
As Second Boon, She asked Yama her in-laws regain their lost kingdom.
As third boon, She Asked yama to have 100 Sons.

Yama granted all three wishes and moved.

but it was not enough She was Still Following him.
Yama Asked, Why are you Following me now?
"Your third boon won't be fulfilled if you would take my husband with you" Said Savitri

Yama was very impressed and He blessed Satyavan with a new life. and that's how Savitri saved
 her husband's life.
